Who is this course for

This BIAN Awarness and Change Agent course is intended for professionals who work in banks and that aspire to help their banks become more Agile by leveraging the Banking Industry Architecture Networks (BIAN).

This eLearning course will provide guidance on how BIAN can be applied. It’s less about the BIAN architecture or management approach, and more about how you can adopt or apply it within an organization, and what teams, structure and professionals you can best leverage.

What to expect in this BIAN Benefits module

This eLearning course is a set of lessons that will help you to manage insights on BIAN, such as its benefits, and how to implement it and adopt it. Where to start, and how best to demonstrate success. What pitfalls can be expected and how to best overcome these.

In this lesson:

This module highlights the importance of finding and nurturing the right individuals to champion BIAN adoption, while also providing strategies for supporting individuals at various stages of capability and willingness.

Lesson video: What do you need to apply BIAN?

1. The importance of champions for change

One of the key factors in the success of any transformation program—whether it’s implementing a new framework like BIAN, adopting Agile, or leading large-scale organizational change—is having the right champions. These are individuals who have both the capability and willingness to drive change within an organization. Champions motivate others, share knowledge, and lead by example. Without them, even the best plans can fail. Identifying the right people to champion your BIAN adoption is crucial to moving the initiative forward successfully.

2. Identifying the right champions: capability vs. willingness

When looking for champions, it’s essential to consider both capability and willingness.
Capability refers to the knowledge and skills someone has, such as understanding BIAN, how to lead change, and the ability to motivate others.
Willingness is about intrinsic motivation—the time, energy, and passion someone is willing to invest in driving the initiative.
The ideal champion is someone who has both capability and willingness, making them perfectly suited to lead and inspire others.

3. Supporting and nurturing champions

Once you’ve identified individuals with the right combination of capability and willingness, it’s important to nurture them.

Support can come in many forms:
Continuous learning: Provide ongoing opportunities for these champions to deepen their knowledge and skills in BIAN and change management.
Empowerment: Give them the resources, tools, and authority to mentor others and motivate them to adopt BIAN practices.

By treating these individuals well and helping them grow, you ensure they stay motivated and equipped to drive the initiative forward.

4. Developing champions with high willingness but low capability

Not everyone who is passionate about change will have all the skills required. However, someone with high willingness can still be a powerful advocate.

To help them develop:
• Offer training and mentorship to build their capability.
• Provide tools and documentation to help them learn more about BIAN and its adoption process.
• Create a shared environment or community portal where they can connect with others and learn from experienced professionals.

5. Engaging professionals who are less willing or less capable

You will likely encounter individuals who are either less willing or less capable to adopt BIAN. For these professionals:

Address concerns: Identify the reasons behind their resistance (e.g., negative past experiences) and provide tailored solutions to overcome them.
Leadership endorsement: Have senior leaders advocate for the initiative and demonstrate its importance.
Motivation: Use personalized success stories and motivational strategies to help them become more willing and capable.

By providing targeted support, these individuals can become contributors to the BIAN adoption process.
