ITIL® 5: IT Service Management Built for an AI-Driven World

Most frameworks age quietly. ITIL did not.

Between the release of ITIL 4 and the arrival of ITIL® 5, the thing ITIL describes changed shape. Teams stopped shipping projects and started running products. AI moved from pilot to production. And the neat process diagrams stopped matching what people actually do on a Tuesday afternoon.

ITIL 5 is the answer to that. It keeps what worked, drops what confused people, and rebuilds the guidance around how digital products and services really get made, run, and improved.

This page covers what ITIL® 5 is, how the certification path works, what changes if you already hold an ITIL® 4 qualification, and which official books and courseware Van Haren Group publishes to support your training.

What Is ITIL® 5?

ITIL, the IT Infrastructure Library, is the most widely adopted framework for IT service management. It gives organizations a shared language and a set of proven practices for delivering IT services that create real value for the business and its customers. ITIL® 5 is the current version, developed and published under PeopleCert.

Earlier versions were written mostly for internal IT departments. ITIL 5 speaks to a wider room. Managed service providers, digital product teams, platform engineers, and the business stakeholders who fund all of it now find themselves inside the same framework.

AI-Native and Complexity-Ready

The headline change is positioning. ITIL 5 is built as AI-native and complexity-native.

In practice that means two things. The guidance assumes AI is already running inside your service estate rather than sitting in a proof of concept. And it assumes you often cannot plan your way out of a problem. Instead of executing a fixed plan, teams are guided to run small experiments, read the signals, and adapt.

Anyone who has watched a rigid process model collapse against a genuinely uncertain situation will recognize why that matters.

The Product and Service Lifecycle

ITIL 5 introduces an eight-stage product and service lifecycle. Discover, Design, Acquire, Build, Transition, Operate, Deliver, Support.

It is the clearest bridge yet between two communities that have spent a decade talking past each other. Product managers recognize the front half. Service managers recognize the back half. ITIL 5 puts them on one line and asks them to work from the same picture.

A Simpler Service Value Chain

ITIL 4 introduced the Service Value System and the service value chain, and plenty of learners found them abstract. ITIL 5 streamlines the value chain into something more recognizable, and it moves concepts that used to sit in advanced modules, such as the service journey, down into Foundation level.

The result is a Foundation course that teaches more of what practitioners actually use, with less to memorize.

The ITIL® 5 Certification Path

The scheme is modular. You start at Foundation, then choose modules based on the work you do rather than climbing a fixed ladder.

ITIL® 5 Foundation

Foundation is the entry point and the prerequisite for everything above it. It covers service management principles, the guiding principles, the four dimensions, the service value system, and the terminology behind core management practices such as incident, problem, and change management.

The exam stays closed book. Forty multiple choice questions, sixty minutes, 65% to pass, taken online with a web proctor whenever it suits the candidate.

Van Haren Group publishes the official ITIL® Foundation (Version 5) guide alongside the ITIL® 5 Foundation Courseware in English and a Dutch edition for the Benelux market.

Core Modules: Transformation, Product, and Service

Three core modules carry the scheme above Foundation.

ITIL® Transformation (Version 5) is the module every designation route passes through. It was the first advanced module released and covers leading change inside complex organizations.

ITIL® Product (Version 5) focuses on the digital product lifecycle, from discovery through to continuous improvement.

ITIL® Service (Version 5) concentrates on service delivery, support, and the operational practices that keep customers coming back.

Extension Modules: Experience, Strategy, and AI Governance

ITIL® Experience (Version 5) covers customer and user experience. It sits naturally alongside XLA® and Experience Management for organizations that have already stopped reporting uptime and started measuring how the service actually feels.

ITIL® Strategy (Version 5) builds the strategic and leadership capability that senior ITSM roles demand.

ITIL AI Governance addresses responsible management of AI inside the organization. That subject moved from optional to unavoidable faster than almost any topic in the framework’s history.

The Four ITIL® Designations

Individual certificates roll up into four designations. ITIL Practice Manager, ITIL Managing Professional, ITIL Strategic Leader, and at the top ITIL Master, which requires the three preceding designations.

Certificates are valid for three years, with renewal options.

ITIL® 4 and ITIL® 5: What Changes for Certified Professionals

Both versions run in parallel during the transition. Nothing you already hold becomes worthless overnight.

The ITIL® Foundation Bridge

If you hold ITIL 4 Foundation, you do not sit Foundation again. The ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5) is a short, lower-cost route that covers only what changed. ITIL 4 Foundation also remains a valid prerequisite for upper-level ITIL 5 qualifications.

Should You Finish Your ITIL® 4 Path First?

For most people already partway through ITIL 4, yes. Finishing the qualification you started is usually faster and cheaper than restarting, and holders of Practice Manager, Managing Professional, or Strategic Leader designations can cross over by taking Transformation rather than rebuilding from scratch.

That is why ITIL 4 material still moves. Van Haren Group continues to publish ITIL® 4 Foundation Courseware in Dutch, the ITIL® 4 Pocket Guide, and specialist courseware for Create, Deliver and Support, Drive Stakeholder Value, Direct, Plan and Improve, and High-velocity IT.

Why ITIL® Certification Is Worth the Effort
For Professionals

ITIL certification is one of the few IT credentials a hiring manager recognizes without having to look it up. It signals that you can talk to engineering and to the business without translating badly in either direction.

The practical gain is bigger than the line on your CV. Certified professionals break down the wall between departments, make faster decisions about where resources go, and can defend those decisions with a framework instead of an opinion.

For Organizations

Service quality is rarely a technology problem. It is a coordination problem.

ITIL gives everyone the same words for incident, problem, change, and value, which removes an enormous amount of daily friction. Organizations that adopt it consistently report fewer repeat incidents, cleaner change processes, and a clearer link between IT spend and business outcomes.

For Trainers and Training Organizations

Accredited courseware saves your trainers weeks of preparation and keeps your delivery aligned with the exam. Van Haren Group’s ITIL courseware is built for classroom and virtual delivery, and trainers can request a viewing copy before committing to a program.

Where ITIL® Fits Alongside Other Frameworks

ITIL was never meant to run alone. It works best when it sits next to the frameworks your organization already uses.

DevOps handles the speed of delivery while ITIL handles the discipline around it. VeriSM™ extends service management thinking beyond IT into the whole enterprise. IT Asset Management supplies the asset and cost data that ITIL practices depend on. And on the project side, PRINCE2® governs the initiatives that create the services ITIL then has to run.

What is the difference between ITIL 4 and ITIL 5?

ITIL 5 is positioned as AI-native and complexity-native. It adds an eight-stage product and service lifecycle, simplifies the service value chain that many ITIL 4 learners struggled with, and moves advanced concepts such as the service journey into Foundation level. The certification scheme is also more modular.

Is ITIL 5 available now?

Yes. ITIL Foundation (Version 5) is available, and the advanced modules are being released in phases, starting with Transformation.

Do I need ITIL 4 before ITIL 5?

No. You can start directly with ITIL 5 Foundation. If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation, the ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5) lets you update without repeating the full course.

How do I get ITIL certified?

Study with official material, then sit the exam through an accredited training provider or an online proctored session. ITIL 5 Foundation is the starting point for every path.
